Tampa Loop

Good morning Tampa!

Fall starts next week, which around here means the storms settle down, but the heat is hanging in there.

Highs sit right around 90 all week, and the rain mostly holds off until Sunday. In this edition, we have...

  • Florida's movie history opens at the History Center

  • The orchestra plays Pirates live to the film

  • Pumpkin season starts Friday in Odessa

  • And more!

Cinema in the Sunshine State opens Saturday at the Tampa Bay History Center. It runs through March, so there's no rush.

It's original posters and lobby cards from the 1920s forward, from the Tarzan pictures to Creature from the Black Lagoon. Our light and our water pulled the film crews down here.

Museum admission covers it.

  • When: Opens Saturday 9/19, then daily 10am-5pm through March 21

  • Where: Tampa Bay History Center, Wayne Thomas Gallery (801 Water St)

  • Cost: $18.95 adults / $16.95 seniors 60 and up / $14.95 ages 7-17 / under 7 free

  • Parking: Channelside garage, about a six-minute walk

Tip: Got a library card in Hillsborough, Pasco, or Pinellas? Ask about the free museum pass first.

The Orchestra Plays Pirates, Live to the Film

The Florida Orchestra plays the whole Pirates of the Caribbean score while the film runs above them. Saturday's show is a 2pm matinee.

Lawrence Loh conducts, and the theater encourages pirate attire on Saturday, which happens to be Talk Like a Pirate Day.

The Mahaffey sits on the water in St. Pete. The matinee gets you back over the bridge well before dark.

  • When: Friday 9/18 at 7:30pm, Saturday 9/19 at 2pm

  • Where: Mahaffey Theater (400 First St S, St. Petersburg)

  • Cost: From $28

Tip: Take the Friday 7:30pm show if a matinee isn't your thing.

Pumpkin Season Starts Friday in Odessa

Raprager Farms opens its fall festival Friday. That's about as close to a season change as we get down here.

Hayrides, a giant hay chute slide, gem mining, pony rides, a corn pit, and thousands of pumpkins. The haunted maze and the haunted hayride start after 5pm, so time it by how brave your crew is.

Go in the morning. You'll want the cool hours, because there's not much shade on a working farm in September.

  • When: Opens Friday 9/18. Fridays 11am-11pm, Saturdays 9am-11pm, Sundays 9am-9pm

  • Where: Raprager Family Farm (16907 Boy Scout Rd, Odessa)

  • Cost: $19
